The MP2761 is a buck-boost charger IC designed for battery packs with 2-cell to 4-cell in series. The device can accept a wide 4V to 22V input voltage (VIN) range to charge the battery. The buck-boost topology allows the battery voltage to be above or below VIN.
When the input is present, the MP2761 operates in charge mode. It measures the battery voltage and charges the battery with four phases: constant-current trickle charge, constant-current pre-charge, constant-current fast charge, and constant-voltage charge. Additional features include charge termination and auto-recharge.
The MP2761 also integrates the input current (IIN) limit and VIN limit to avoid overloading the input power source. This is compliant with the USB and power delivery (PD) specifications.
The MP2761 provides narrow-voltage DC (NVDC) power path management. An integrated N-channel MOSFET driver (BGATE) controls an external N-channel MOSFET (BATFET) to regulate the system’s minimum voltage and provide a battery supplement function. The device can supply a wide voltage range (4V to 21V) at the IN pin when source mode is enabled. The device also has an IN output current limit in source mode (IIN_SRC) with high resolution. These are compliant with USB PD specifications.
The I2C/SMBus interface can configure the charge and discharge parameters, including the IIN limit, VIN limit, charge current, battery-full regulation voltage, IN output voltage in source mode (VIN_SRC), and IIN_SRC. The MP2761 can also provide information on statuses and faults through the I2C/SMBus registers.
To guarantee safe operation, the device limits the die temperature to a configurable threshold. Other safety features include input over-voltage protection (OVP), battery OVP, system OVP, thermal shutdown, and a configurable timer to prevent prolonged charging of a dead battery.
The MP2761 is available in a TQFN-30 (4mmx5mm) package.
