The MP3718 is a robust battery management device, providing a complete analog front-end (AFE) monitoring and protection solution. It is designed for multiple-cell series battery management systems (BMS). This device can support I2C or SPI communication. It supports connections for 4-cell to 24-cell series battery packs, with an absolute voltage that exceeds 140V on specific pins.
The MP3718 integrates two separate analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). The first ADC measures each channel’s differential cell voltages (up to 24 channels), die temperature, and 10-channel temperature via an external negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistor. The second ADC measures the charge/discharge current via an external current-sense (CS) resistor (RCS). When paired with an MPF4278x fuel gauge, the MP3718 can achieve a state-of-charge (SOC) error to within 2%.
The device features high-side (HS) drivers and robust protection functions. With two discharge MOSFET drives, the CDSG pin provides discharge fault protection in the charging circuit for split-port applications, and the DSG pin provides fault protection for the discharge circuit. In addition to MOSFET-based protection, it also has secondary protection to burn out the three-terminal fuse.
The device can operate in standalone mode without a microcontroller (MCU). It also integrates balancing MOSFETs to equalize mismatched cells, with the option to drive the external balancing MOSFETs. It has an optimized baseline current consumption that depends on the operating mode.
For applications requiring compliance with IPC 2221B or UL 60950-1, conformal coating may be required depending on the battery pack voltage.
The MP3718 is available in an LQFP-64 (7mmx7mm) package.
